Ah Smelting season. In Chicago there is a tradition that goes back a long way. That Is the Smelting season April 1 to 30 after dark) . The Smelt run at this time to breed near shore. Fishermen set up nets lights and drink beer while waiting for these fish. Im the past there are pictures of men catching huge hauls of smelt. In the past 10 years of so I and my friends have gone. We set up the nets, lights, fires (Chicago in April is freeking cold), and we drink till way too late. We never expect to catch any smelt any more , now its an opening of the spring season. We have the first bbq of the year there. Hot dogs, wings, hot links and I make my arracherra (skirt steak in a lime chipotle sauce) thats what we feast on. It use to draw big groups of friends. Its has kinda dwindled to a few die hard few. I always go (thats a given). Once there used to be a title of smelt queen, but alas I fear that those days are over.
